NZ Cannabis Cup Frequently asked Questions
I want to enter the "Outdoor" Category - if entries close Feb 28 2019.. is that not wayy too early?
Yes indeed it is! and we do realize this - The NZ Cannabis Cup was first made public in February 2018. This allowed for those entrants wanting to get outdoor to start saving and curing for the cup..
This is unfortunately the first cup in NZ in a long time, and one of the stepping stones, there are ways around this. If you have no outdoor left from last season and still wish to enter, we recommend trying some "Auto-flowering" strains, most of these will be finished on time to enter the cup if you wish. or save your outdoors curing it up nicely for the 2020 Cannabis Cup
How are entries judged?
Each cup entry received will first pick up a score for its genetic description provided, from here, all amounts will be split and sent across the country to our various judges (25 of them). Each judge will blind test each entry, by this, they will be given an entry with only an entry number and no other description. They will fill out a score card with score of 1 to 10 for various different categories. Scores will accumulate via blind testing, meanwhile, Growseph will test each entry for percentages of the using thin layer chromatography testing Alpha-Cat testing kits. Scores will further accumulated. The top 5 scores in each category will next go to the lab for Gas Chromatography Testing, in which scores for terpenes, and residual solvent content will accumulate (or not!).
The final scores will be added up determining the overall winner of the cup, and the top 3 winners of each category.
How do you think you are going to get away with a Cannabis cup at your festival?
To begin, The NZ Cannabis Cup will NOT be judged at NZ Harvest Festival, judging etc will take place all before the festival, leaving the festival as the prize giving - announcing the winners.
While Cannabis is illegal, we are at a day and age where our looming cannabis industry is inevitable. We are setting a precedent for the upcoming future of cannabis in NZ and setting a stage for New Zealand to present cannabis on the world stage... this cannabis cup is merely a manifestation of this approaching future. Authorities are respecting our quest to find our countries finest, and are appreciating the level of commitment NZ Harvest Festival bring to to the table doing so.
The Winners wont want to show their faces, will they?
Some might, others might not. The cup is structured so our countries finest breeders, growers, and medicine makers can create their brand. No real names will be read out - only brand names ie "Growseph Green". Entrants will not be pressured to put a face behind their brand, and most will not. We welcome those who want to. And we respect those whom do not.
How Many Judges are there?
25 Judges are to be blind sampling entries over the course of 4 to 7 months as entries come in. (Most points will be derived from blind scoring). A team of 3 to 5 judges will be testing for cannabinoids and accumulating overall scores. +1 one Lab tester, giving us a total of 31 judges.
To enter concentrates I read you need 14 grams, is that not a bit much?
Yes, we do agree, and we were only modelling our cup from current US cups, but we realise 14grams is ALOT of concentrate to face up with, and have changed this.
The official amount of concentrates needed to enter the cup is 7grams total in 0.25g single packs.
Are you going to have any more categories such as "Hydroponics" and "CBD" and "Autoflowering"?
Short answer - Yes definitely, just maybe not this cup, as it is our first we are gauging how many entries we will get, we dont want categories where only 2 or 3 entries are recieved. If we get enough that allows for another category, we will add it, and let all entrants know. How ever in the meantime the categories we have provided will find NZs best, no problems, and the door is open for more categories in the years to come.
